Greater Oregon March of Dimes will serve apple pie at the State Capitol in celebration of our national organization’s 75th anniversary; as well as to urge legislators to support SB 172.

Tuesday, March 5
10:00 am – noon

SB 172 would ensure that all newborns in Oregon are screened for critical congenital heart disease before they are discharged from the hospital.  An estimated 400 babies in Oregon are born with congenital heart defects. Twenty-five percent of these babies will have critical congenital heart disease (CCHD),meaning they require intervention within hours, days or the first three months after birth.  Screening for CCHD is done by checking the amount of oxygen in the babies blood using a pulse oximeter.  It is a non-invasive test, it is low cost and it is effective in detecting most of the conditions that make up CCHD.

March of Dimes staff and volunteers handed out apple pie at the Oregon State Capitol today–along with information about maternal and infant health.

In addition to educating those who picked up a slice of fruity American goodness about our mission and our hope to get HB 2236 (the Birth Anomaly Registry Bill) passed, we also took letters, information sheets and purple wristbands to each and every legislator in the Oregon House and Senate.

It was a great day.  And for those of us old enough to remember School House Rock, we had visions of a little white scroll of paper sitting on concrete steps  singing, “I’m just a bill. Yes I’m only a bill. And I’m sitting here on Capitol Hill….”

March of Dimes Lobby Day

On Tuesday, April 5th, the Greater Oregon March of Dimes is spending the day at the Oregon State Capitol to give out information on maternal and child health. And apple pie.

We’d love for you to join us.  C’mon down; bring the kids, have some apple pie, maybe even talk to a politician or two. 

We’ll be in the Galleria area starting at 10:00 AM.
