We are excited to announce that Dorinda Dawes, Eugene Coburg Road Branch Manager, has been named Chair of the 2013 Lane County March of Dimes.

Dorinda has been walking for the March of Dimes for more than 40 years. When asked about her increased involvement with the non-profit group, she shared, “This is my way of showing thanks for being blessed with healthy babies and an opportunity to do more for those that need support.”

This year’s March for Babies has been great, and we have our last two walks in Oregon and SW Washington tomorrow. Even with the money raised from those two walks projected, we are still short of our 2012 March for Babies goal by $100,000.

$100,000 is a lot of money. But when you break it down to $5 from you, $10 from your neighbor, another $5 from Aunt Jane, it’s much more achievable. Here’s the thing: EVERY $5 donation is really, really important. Every single one.

We want to keep doing everything we can to have stronger, healthier babies. Will you help us with a $5 donation today?

Newborn screening, PKU and March of Dimes

Newborn Screening

As of 2008, every state requires screening newborns for 21 or more serious but treatable conditions. Many states screen for the March of Dimes recommend core panel of 29 conditions. KGW ran a great news story this morning on the importance of newborn screening, focusing on one boy’s experience with PKU. March of Dimes funded research used to develop the PKU test, and Oregon was the first state to mandate its use in the 1960′s. March of Dimes has been at the forefront of advocacy for newborn screening for the core panel of 29 conditions, and will continue to be as new screens are developed to improve the health of children born with these conditions. Children’s art show benefits March of Dimes

The 2011 Art Gallery at The Goddard School

There’s something special going on today from 3:30 to 5:30 at The Goddard School in Clackamas. The school will be filled with the whimsical art of its students–all for sale to benefit one family’s March for Babies Team.

Daniele and Ted Riehl started their March for Babies team, Audrie Claire Riehl, after losing one of their twins shortly after birth. Their surviving twin attends The Goddard School and the school has rallied around them in their support of March of Dimes.

“We are all delighted to raise money for an organization that researches the problems that threaten the health of babies and helps mothers have full-term pregnancies,” says Jennie Brawn, school owner.

The Goddard School located at 14210 SE Sunnyside Road in Clackamas will be the hosting their 2nd Annual Art Gallery benefitting The March of Dimes today from 3:30 pm- 5:30 pm. Suggested donation for each piece is $5-10. 100% of the proceeds will go directly to The March of Dimes in honor of Audrie Claire Riehl.

Salem Health raises $4,000 with Bags for Babies!

Special thanks to Sheila Huff and the Labor & Delivery team at Salem Health who helped raised $4,000 for March of Dimes in Friday’s Bags for Babies sale!

Bags for Babies far exceeded expectations! Over 350 bags were donated and the day started off with a line-up out the door! (What can we say? You never can have too many purses!)

Thanks to those who came by, picked up a purse AND supported the cause.

The Bennington Family of Bend, Oregon

A big congrats to Robert and Holly Bennington of Bend! They won the round-trip, fly-somewhere-warm-on-us tickets for two! (Too bad we didn’t have five tickets!)

Walking on the St. Charles Health Systems team, Robert and Holly raised over $200 by April 15th and their name was selected from a random drawing of more than 190 names.

Happy vacationing, Robert and Holly! And THANK YOU for all you’re doing to help babies be born healthy!

Barbara Roberts, Levé and Oregon Community Foundation at the 30th Annual White Rose Luncheon

We are excited to announce that Barbara Roberts, former governor of Oregon, will be the keynote speaker at the 30^th Annual White Rose Luncheon!

The first (and only) female governor of Oregon, and one of the first ten women to be elected governor in the United States, Roberts now represents District 6 on the Metro Council. Adding author to her long list of accomplishments, Councilor Roberts has recently published a personal and political memoir, Up the Capitol Steps: A Woman’s March to the Governorship.

Another distinction of the 30^th White Rose Luncheon is the special recognition of community organization Levé. Levé’s mission is to lift and support local nonprofits, working together to address the most critical needs of the Pacific Northwest community.

Levé selects an established local nonprofit to partner with each year. Invested in the success of the nonprofit’s mission-critical work, Levé provides financial and volunteer support throughout the year, culminating in their signature Charity Ball event.

As a continuation of their support, Oregon Community Foundation (OCF) is Presenting the 30th Annual White Rose Luncheon. The mission OCF is to improve life in Oregon and promote effective philanthropy. OCF works with individuals, families, businesses and organizations to create charitable funds to support the community causes they care about, awarding over $60 million grants annually.
