Heather Irwin

Heather Irwin
Top Walker, Volunteer, Chapter Ambassador…
Salem

Heather Irwin supports March of Dimes because her son Jaxson was born at 25 weeks. He weighed only 455 grams and he was only 11.5 inches long. Heather deiced to walk in March for Babies while Jaxson was in the NICU.

“After learning a bit more about March of Dimes and what they do, it made me realize that without them, there would have been no hope for my son. Their research and development has been instrumental in his survival.”

This year will be her 5th year supporting March of Dimes. She has initiated the Family Teams Board for her area, helped re-route the walk last year, and she has gone to other fundraisers and events. Heather continues to raise money each year to help prevent prematurity and lower health risks involved. In 2009, her son was an Ambassador.

Heather has always felt a need and desire to do volunteer work and help her community. Before her son was born she didn’t have the passion or dedication to follow through with finding a way to give back. However, two months after his birth, she came across March of Dimes. After signing up for her first walk, Heather tried her hardest to raise money because the walk was being held on Jaxson’s due date. She did not want to see other people go through what she had to go through when her son was born. In just three short weeks Heather was able to raise almost $5000.

Heather realizes that without March of Dimes Jaxson may not be as healthy as he is today. The survival of her son pushes her each year to raise money and try to help in any way that she can. The development of surfactant has significantly helped Jaxson.

When asked what she was born to do, Heather said, “The one thing that really excites me is giving back and volunteering. So, if I was born to do one thing, it would be to help others.”

Kraig and Heidi Albright had twins. Twice. Both sets were born premature. Their first, Kenny and Katie, at 21 weeks, lived for just one hour. Their second set of twins, Kaden and Kory, were born at 25 weeks and spent 105 days in the NICU.

James and Holly Hanset’s son, Holdyn, was born at 24 weeks gestation weighing just 1 pound, 8 ounces.  He went through 2 rounds of pneumonia, double laser eye surgery, PDA ligation, dual hernia surgery, grade 2 and grade 4 brain bleed and more during his 134 days in the NICU.

Jorge and LaNae Rodas’ daughter, Carmendy, spent 14 weeks in the NICU after being born at 28 weeks gestation after LaNae had a complete placental abruption. She was just 2 pounds, 1 ounce.

Scott and Amy Sandie also had two experiences with preterm birth. Liam and Elsa Sandie were born at 27 weeks gestation and their big sister, Mara, born two years earlier, was also premature. See a video about Liam and Elsa’s early birth here.

We’ve started the search for our 2013 Official Ambassadors!

Official Ambassadors are the face of our mission: families who have experienced premature birth or birth defects and have benefited from the work of March of Dimes. Official Ambassadors for Greater Oregon March of Dimes must reside in Oregon or SW Washington and be able to speak at local events and to the media about their story.

Does this sound like you?  Have a passion for helping us reach the day when all babies are born healthy?  Fill out the Official Ambassador Application 2013 and return it (instructions within) by October 15.

People are amazing. They really are.

This group of family and friends not only amaze us, they humble us. They have created their very own March for Babies walk. Only they call it McKalee’s Walk and Jog, in honor of the organizers’ daughter who was born premature and didn’t survive.

Together they walked, remembered, and raised about $500 to help us find the causes and solutions to premature birth and birth defects so others might not meet the loss they have.

Pretty remarkable; don’t you think?  Here’s a snapshot of their day as captured by Blue Mountain Eagle.

This is Molly Grace, granddaughter of Steve Mattson from the Albany Kmart. She was born May 30th–three and a half months too soon.

Molly Grace’s mom was rushed to the hospital with preeclampsia 14 weeks before her due date. After an emergency c-section Molly Grace was born weighing just 2lbs 13 oz. And she was born, coincidentally, in Preeclampsia Awareness Month (May).

Steve’s daughter wasn’t expecting a premature birth–in fact, she was camping when it happened. But as Steve says, “It can affect any one of us at some point in time.”

Kmart is a long-time national partner for March of Dimes. They’ve raised more than $100 million for our mission over the last 29 years. You may have noticed the wonderful “i’m born to” signs hanging in their stores.  Their 2012 campaign goes through June 23rd. Stop by a Kmart store near you and round up your purchase to the next dollar to help babies like Molly Grace.

If you go in the Albany Kmart, be sure to tell Steve hello and congratulate him on becoming a Grandfather.

This year’s March for Babies has been great, and we have our last two walks in Oregon and SW Washington tomorrow.  Even with the money raised from those two walks projected, we are still short of our 2012 March for Babies goal by $100,000.

$100,000 is a lot of money.  But when you break it down to $5 from you, $10 from your neighbor, another $5 from Aunt Jane, it’s much more achievable.  Here’s the thing: EVERY $5 donation is really, really important.  Every single one.

We want to keep doing everything we can to have stronger, healthier babies.  Will you help us with a $5 donation today?

The child above was at our Portland March for Babies this year.  As you can see from her shirt, we helped her get there.  The work of March of Dimes has also helped Katrina Janowski.  She’s one of our biggest fans, and she’s asking for your help, too.  Watch the video she made and donate $5 in her honor to our Helping Babies 2012 Team

Cruze from 105.1 The Buzz, Lisa Lawrence of Liberty Northwest, and 2012 Chapter Ambassador Mary Pat Janowski at the Team Captain Luncheon

With just 25 days to go until March for Babies, the Team Captain Luncheon in Portland was all-a-buzz. And we’re not just saying that because 105.1 The Buzz morning DJ Cruze was emceeing.

Dazzling as he was, the crowd was awed by Chapter Ambassador Mary Pat Janowski sharing her story.  And Lisa Lawrence, Team Captain from Top 10 Team Liberty Northwest, gave excellent tips for bringing in the big bucks for babies.  Hold a Mad Hatter contest was one of Lisa’s tips (as evidenced by her awesome March of Dimes Purple hat).

New March for Babies Director Shelli Blank gave some great suggestions as well.  Have some die-hard Ducks and Beavers fans? Put that competitive spirit to work by having them agree to dress in the their rival team’s colors if they don’t meet their fundraising goal. If they happen to be men, have them go the extra mile by wearing the rival team’s cheerleading outfits.  That’ll make sure they meet their fundraising goals! A big thanks to all of you out there working together for stronger, healthier babies!  We appreciate you!
